Why Attack on Titan is Not a Shonen Anime

Why Attack on Titan is Not a Shonen Anime

Attack On Titan is one of the popular anime nowadays. However, some critics say that Attack on Titan is not a shonen anime. But, why Attack on Titan is not a shonen anime?

Attack On Titan is not a shounen. It’s a seinen, and that’s different. The harsh, cruel, and dramatic reality of Attack on Titan is definitely not aimed at young people. Eren was maybe a typical shonen main character in the first episodes, but you quickly notice something is completely different with him.

His wrath slowly turns into complete ruthlessness and madness, until he finally understands at some point in the story that his impulsiveness will never lead him to actual victory (to protect Mikasa, Armin, and the others) and that is because of how his behavior caused many soldiers’ death.

Shonen Anime vs Seinen Anime

Shonen Seinen
Shonen anime (boys) are generally about action/adventure stories where the main character goes after his dream or desires. Seinen anime (older men) are about stories that are more mature than shonen anime. Often times these stories are about relationships, romance, and love.
Shonen anime characters often wear tight-fitting clothing and sport short hairstyles. Seinen anime characters often wear loose-fitting clothing and sport long hairstyles.
Shonen anime characters are generally more violent than seinen anime characters; they may fight each other using weapons or even fists. Seinen anime characters are generally more sensitive and shy than shonen anime characters. They do not like fighting or violence.
Shonen anime characters go out and get what they want. Seinen anime characters work hard to get what they want.
Shonen anime characters try to act tough and are always ready to fight. Seinen anime characters try to act calm and collected and are rarely seen fighting.
Shonen anime characters usually appear older than their counterparts in seinen anime. Seinen anime characters usually appear younger than their counterparts in shonen anime
Shonen anime characters seem to know everything and do things right away. Seinen anime characters take time to figure things out.
Shonen anime characters don't listen to anyone else's advice. Seinen anime characters listen to everyone and follow their own path.

Why Attack on Titan is Not a Shonen Anime?

There are a lot of reasons behind this...but I am going to try my best to explain them. First off, let me start by saying that Attack on Titan is actually an anime/manga/novel series created by Hajime Isayama. However, he originally had planned on making this into a live-action movie. But due to how the story was written, it would have been extremely difficult to make it into a live-action movie without changing the plot. So instead they decided to do an anime adaptation. Now coming to the question of whether or not it is a shonen anime, I have to say that no it's not. So what makes Attack on Titan different from any other shonen anime out on the market right now? Well, firstly this series doesn't follow any manga formula at all. You won't find yourself following any characters throughout their lives nor will you get to know them well throughout the series.

Also if you were to look at the characters, you wouldn't really get a good idea about who they are. Basically, everyone looks the same and has virtually no distinguishing features between themselves. The next thing would be the plot. While the majority of its plots are pretty straightforward, there are some twists and turns here and there. Now before people go ahead and think that I hate this series, I love it. It's just that I don't feel that this series should be classified under the category of shonen anime. Why? Let me tell you!

If you're looking to read a good shonen anime series then you need to look no further than Naruto. As much as we want to deny it, the fact still remains that Naruto follows pretty much all of the classic shonen anime formulas. Sure it may not always be perfect but it does follow many of those formulas. Then there's Bleach, One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc. Now, these titles are not completely free from shonen anime formulas.

But they do manage to stray away from them enough to keep the series fresh and interesting. Just look at Bleach and One Piece. Both of their series are very long and take place over a very large span of time. In both cases, the series will throw a curveball every once and a while to keep things interesting. And even though the episodes aren't necessarily short (I mean they're still only 22 minutes each), they still manage to end on a cliffhanger. Which is something that's absent in Attack on Titan.

Finally, we could probably talk about the music in Attack on Titan. Now the music in this series is absolutely fantastic. It really sets the mood for the series perfectly. All of the songs fit into the atmosphere of the series perfectly and never fail to impress me. Plus the opening theme song is absolutely amazing. It truly is one of the greatest openings I've ever heard of in my entire life. Now I'm sure that some of you are thinking that the anime's soundtrack isn't anything special. But trust me when I say that it's 100% worth purchasing. Because unlike many of the anime soundtracks that are released nowadays, they haven't added any annoying English language tracks onto the soundtrack. So basically if you're looking to buy the soundtrack for Attack on Titan, you should definitely purchase it. Once again, I hope that I managed to answer all your questions. Thank you guys and I'll catch you all next week!
